Dr. Abdelghani completed his undergraduate at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon his master and doctorate at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He then joined Tulane/ department of Environmental Health Sciences as a faculty member and have been at Tulane ever since. He is a US citizen and married with two adult children.
He had worked in many countries including Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Lebanon, and others. He is a consultant to several local, national, and international organizations. Recently he completed a mission in Haiti funded by the Inter-American Development Bank.
Dr. Abdelghani’s current teaching, research, and field work focus on global Environmental Health issues with interest in developing countries. These issues include, water quality and quantity, clean air, food safety, Climate Change, management of municipal and hazardous waste, exposure to toxic and hazardous substances /ecotoxicology with emphasis on the impact on aquatic organisms, control of vectors of health importance, and solid and liquid waste disposal.
He has been responsible for teaching all sections of the school core course in Environmental Health for more than 30 years. He also teaches other courses at the graduate and undergraduate level.
He chaired, co-chaired and served as a member of more than 55 doctoral students.
Dr. Abdelghani has developed curricula for graduate and undergraduate degree and non -degree programs in Public Health/Environmental Health Sciences. He initiated the establishment and played a major role in the development of the Undergraduate degree program in Public Health university wide. Currently, it is considered one of the most successful and attended programs in the university. It is an excellent pipeline to the master and doctorate degrees at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
He served as the department chair from 1999-2005 and director of Tulane university school of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Laboratories for 22 years.
During his tenure as a chair, he was responsible for 22 full time professors and 45 part time faculty at different ranks. At Tulane, Dr. Abdelghani continuous funding in research and training grants. He has more than 125 publications in the open literature and more than 60 national and international presentations. He serves on the editorial board of 5 international Journals in the field of Global Environmental Health.
Dr. Abdelghani has been very successful in securing Federal and Industrial research funding.
In addition, he designed and furnished Tulane University Environmental Health Laboratories. He is trained laboratory technicians on instrument operations including but not limited to, Gas Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma, Liquid Chromatography etc.
As part of his responsibility as full professor, Dr. Abdelghani directed these laboratories for more than 22 years. He also assisted in establishing environmental health laboratories and training programs on equipment for testing of Environmental samples in at Tulane university, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Suriname and Turkey
He has implemented and /or participated in many projects addressing environmental health problems in the United States and other countries. He was closely involved in the after math of Hurricane Katrina (2005)as well as the recent Gulf of Mexico oil Spill. One of the courses Dr. Abdelghani teaches is on Environmental Sampling and Monitoring following Disasters.
He also worked as the Senior Public Health Officer for ministries of health including Jordan and Abu Dhabi/ United Arab Emirates. Responsibilities all Public Health/Environmental Health issues including occupational health, biological and chemical contaminants of food, communicable diseases control, control of vectors of disease, air pollution , vaccinations, investigations of outbreaks of diseases, health education and other related responsibilities.
Dr. Abdelghani participated and continues to participate in the training of Peace Corp volunteers at TSPH&TM who specialize in Environmental Health. The training focus is on water, food safety and sanitation in developing countries
